Hoyt Penland Injured at the Baja 1000

A familiar name around the GNCC series as wall as SCORE at the Baja is Mike Penland, Quad Racer for Can-Am. Longest standing Maxxis sponsorship and 5 time Baja winner in his class.

As one of the most recognized names (and faces) in ATV racing, Mike Penland has always brought his wit, skill and determination to the GNCC course. Before the race starts, one can usually spot his distinctive straw hat and moustache making its way throughout the line as he offers last-minute advice to nervous racers, or a kind word to someone he has not seen in a while.

Once the flag drops, however, Penland is one of the best racers on the course. He is a multi-time champion from the deserts of the Baja Peninsula to the woods of the eastern United States. He returns to Can-Am racing aboard an Outlander 800 in the 4x4 Limited class; he will be seeking his unprecedented twelfth GNCC championship!

As Mike Penland's son, Hoyt Penland has been around ATV racing just about his entire life. He joins his father on the GNCC series where he will ride a Renegade 800 in the competitive U2 class. Hoyt looks to build on his experience gained during the 2007 season and contest for the class championship in 2008.

Mike's son Hoyt Penland suffered a nasty crash in the recent Baja 1000.
His leg was broken in 9 places. He had stabilizing surgery in Guerro Negros and then transported to La Paz for further surgery.

Had been seriously injured Tuesday evening and transported; quad left at course. Team found it at Ojos Negros last night, stripped of anything carryable.

We received an emergency email request for assistance from industry writer for OffRoad.com and family friend, Rick Sosebee. Once I spoke with Rick to get the basic facts and relayed them to Art Jurado of RDF he spring into action seeking facts and solutions to getting this young man the 1200 miles up Baja and back to the US. And then to somehow get Hoyt home to Georgia.

Many from the Off Road community have helped so far: Collecting cash in Mexico for the Doctors, surgery and pain meds. Even though money was collected and sent via Western Union to get Hoyt released from the hospital, Mike was only allowed to pull out $1000 per day for the Doctors. It's gotta be scary dealing with this out of the country.

Hoyt is coming to America
He is being flown to San Diego soon. Then he'll be flown with a family friend home to Georgia. His father Mike will drive the 3600 miles home alone from Mexico. Both men need your prayers !

Hoyt is now resting in Ensenada with one of Mike's buddies. Mike is welding his Gas Tank Bracket back onto their big 650 truck. The thing broken loose on the way to Ensenada. They strapped it to get into town. Then they make the last 100 miles to San Diego to put Hoyt and buddy Doug on a plane home.

I wished Mike Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at RDF. He said he'll either get a chicken dinner at Denny's for one... or maybe stop at a Golden Arch Beef Barn as he starts his drive across country. I suggested the new Crispy Chicken Sandwich to stay with the Holiday theme. He said he'll get two ! LOL

Hi, I am Mike Penland's oldest daughter and Hoyt's sister. Thank all of you so much for your efforts in bringing them home. Hoyt arrived in Georgia early Friday morning, and he is now recovering at home. Dad is several hundred miles into his drive home. Please continue to remember them, and our family, in your prayers.--Chrissy Penland Clarke
