Shawn Fincher #617

On May 19th, Shawn Fincher crashed on his home track. He was knocked unconscious and life flighted to the hospital. He had a broken femur, dislocated hip, brain swelling, & bleeding on the brain. He then had a 7.5 minute seizure that led to a stroke and eventually, they had to remove the left half of his skull to relieve the pressure. He was unconscious for 18 days and just recently woke up, only he is not very alert. They fear the stroke may have caused him permanent vision problems, including possible blindness. His eyes aren't moving and are dilated and the pupils aren't responding to light. The good news is that he is now awake and he is not paralyzed like they had feared.

Shawn's close friends have started the website www.StayStrongShawn.com to raise funds for his family and for his medical bills while Shawn is in the hospital.

We want to thank the Rider Down foundation and our entire Motocross community for the thoughts and prayers you've given Shawn these last two weeks.

Thanks for the prayers and keep them coming!

Shawn has been transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston for rehab. He was doing really well for a few days, waking up when they asked him to, but yesterday he didn't wake up for over 24 hours. Today they will be giving him a stimulant to wake him up.

He currently has no vision, due to the stroke he had while unconscious. Please pray for his vision to return!

Shawn is doing well! He came home last Wednesday and has been receiving special care and treatment at home. He can see too! He still has a feeding tube and a bandage from where the trache tube was in, and he's very very skinny.

But he can sit up with some help and can give a thumbs up. He tries to talk a little and he can "laugh" at our jokes. Sometimes Shawn seems all there and like he understands but sometimes he zones out, as I've heard is common with brain injuries.

RiderDown sent him a great care package and donation and his family is very grateful for that!

We would love any recommendations of physical therapists or speech therapists in the Houston/Galveston, TX area that provide low cost service. Shawn's parents and family are helping with therapy but he could really use a professional.

Sooo glad to hear of Shawn's progression. I check the website often to see how he's doing. Keep smiling for Shawn...laughter is the best medicine.

One of our board members lives in the Houston area.
David - Any suggestions for physical or speech therapists? If not, do you know anyone who may have suggestions?
