Monday of last week I had surgery on my left shoulder and it was a breeze. The worst part of the day was when they put in the pain blocker to numb my whole left side. This little guy with a big smile and a 3 inch needle was trying to find a nerve in my neck to inject which looked like a pint of embalming fluid. This procedure only took about a minute or so, but it was a very long minute. This left my left side totally numb which meant I would need less general anesthetic and would wake up feeling better and it worked great.
The following Wednesday I went in for my first day of rehab with Ed, Dr Mark?s rehab guy and he was great. He worked the shoulder gingerly and gave me some good information. At this point I felt pretty confident that with my high tolerance for pain I would fly through rehab.
Then yesterday which is one week after surgery and the start of my second rehab session with Ed, in walks Dr. Mark. He wanted to see how I was doing, or should I say hear how I was doing. He takes my arm and says to relax and begins to go through my range of motion. Because I am a macho guy with a high tolerance for pain I don?t make a sound. As he continues to move the arm and shoulder through an even greater range and the pain moves up and beyond that so called pain scale of 1 thru 10, I began to realize that macho doesn?t work in rehab because he will continue to increase the range of motion until I scream. So I started screaming like a little girl. As it turns out there was a police officer that I met in the waiting room that had the same surgery a week or so before mine and I can hear him laughing his head off and peaking in the door with a big smile. Once Ed went to work on me we were able to keep everyone entertained for the next 30 minutes or so. But once again those were very long minutes.
Overall it seems to be going great and I will continue to work hard at home on my range of motion before my next visit to the torture chamber?..I mean Dr. Mark office. Just kidding.
Thanks for the great work Dr. Mark and Ed.
See you on Friday,
David
