Hello,
My name is Josh Abston, alias Rambo McQueen (#88) and I had a spinal chord injury April 7th of this year while racing MX in Ark. To make a long story short, and for those who may want the long story-write me, I have a level C3-C4 incomplete spinal chord injury called Central Chord Syndrome. This is when the paralyzing effects mainly are concentrated on the upper extremities. In my case mainly my left arm and hand. Immediately after my injury I was completely paralyzed. I spent 47 days in a hospital, 36 of which were in Shepherd Center where I learned to walk again and get some of my old life back. No, I am not riding and do not plan on it, today and hopefully forever-it would just be too much for my family to handle after all that they have been through, and I am 50 years old. My sons and I just spent three days at Loretta Lynns, where I met Bruce, who turned me onto this site. I know that I am one of the lucky ones, it could have been much worse. I was wearing an EVS neck collar when I went over the bars, my LEATT Brace was on order. Today, my son does not ride without his on. I maintain a web page through the Shepherd Center website at www.carepages.com under my name Josh Abston. I posted daily about my miraculous recovery journey after I became able to type. Check it out, lots of love, support, and prayer, which is what I hope to bring to this site. !=!

Hi Josh,

Welcome to the site. What a great story! I look forward to checking out the carepage info. My husband and I have several friends that have spinal cord injuries from motocross, including James Marshall. It is so amazing to see and hear about all the new advances they are making in treating spinal cord injuries.

Good to have you at RiderDown.

First of all, Thank Goodness you are up and around and have some mobility in the upper extremeties.:thumb Your post hit me harder than I expected. Especially this part.
No, I am not riding and do not plan on it, today and hopefully forever-it would just be too much for my family to handle after all that they have been through, and I am 50 years old.
I will be candid here.
I am 46 years old and plan on riding as long as I am able. I wear mucho protective gear but not the Leatt brace. (yet) As I read your post, I'm pretty sure I caught myself being that guy that thinks it "won't happen to him". I still race MX and I still take some pretty big risks.(considering I don't bounce like I use to) I still crash and I still expect to have more surgeries. But something about your post had me doing a mental double-take on the whole "what if" scene. Thanks for posting. I have some thinking to do. Nothing too heavy, mind you. Just want to make sure all the P's and Q's are in order just in case.:thumb You reminded me that a man really needs to be responsible all the time.

A big shout out to Josh, Jake & Pete for all of their hard work and support they showed RDF again this year at Loretta Lynn's. We had a chance to hang out a bit while working the booth and visiting with the Borders.

I hope you guys are enjoying the rower! :thumb
