Working for an employer who treats employees with respect works out well for both. Bill Hullinger, President and CEO of American Medical Bill Review, AMBR, in Redding, explains why.
Q: Tell us a bit about your company. Exactly what is it and what is the function?
Basically, we audit medical records and bills for government agencies. We facilitate the adjudication, settlement or resolution of a medical bill or claim.
Q: I don’t imagine as a young child you grew up wanting to operate this kind of business. How did you become involved in this line of work?
No, it wasn’t a childhood dream, but I love what I do. I used to be the vice president of an insurance company years ago that was owned by a hospital. There I learned exactly how hospitals operate when it comes to billing and how they price out services. I realized it wasn’t necessarily in the best interest of the patients, or those accruing hospital costs.
Q: How long have you owned this business?
Since 1996.
Q: How many employees do you have?
Forty-six.
Q: One of your employees nominated you for this column because she loves working for you, and your company was also nominated for the annual “Best Employee of Shasta County Award.”
Yes, well I was pleasantly surprised by that nomination. These things are a great source of validation that perhaps my company is doing a few things right.
Q: What are those things?
It’s a basic philosophy I think. We pay well, and treat employees well. Those who work here obtain flex time as families are extremely important, and I know that’s a perk that many corporations do not offer these days.
Q: What advice do you have for entrepreneurs when it comes to hiring?
Hire the right people and treat them like gold.
Q: How does one know if they are hiring the right people?
Well, that takes practice and lots of trial and error experience. It’s important to remember that it’s not always necessarily about skill, but about personality and fit. Skill does come into play, however. Hiring the right fit comes with experience, really.
