My boyfriend was a pro mx rider but shattered his ankle last year in a bad MX accident. He has had several surgeries to repair it but the doctors say that it will never heal completely and he will never be able to ride the same again. Since all the doctors have told him this he has gone into a downward spiral and terrible state of depression. It was his dream to be a pro MX rider and make a career of riding and his dreams are now shattered. I am reaching out to find anybody that knows anyone with similair injuries or some sort of similairity that has recovered to uplift him and give him hope that HE can recover because he doesn't think he can. His name is Matt Stavron, you can google his name and find a video of him kicking *** before his injury...thanks

Scorpgurl,

I know Matt is hurting.. physically, mentally, and emotionally. Its a process to come back from a life altering injury. But you can read through many stories on this page of folks who have the love of the sport in their blood who have proven their doctors wrong. There is a reason why they call it practicing medicine. Where there is a will... there IS a way. I promise. It will not be easy, it will not be without trial and error, and it will not be without some pain. But EVERYTHING in this life worth fighting for is not easy. Heck, I'm sure just his learning to be at the level he was was not without trial and error.

I know I'm writing a small book, but its coming from experience and I'm STILL learning. I'm still adapting, and I'm still depending on those who care about me for their support. Everyone needs balcony people. Those people who stand and applaud us and support us through life. Matt sounds like he has some great support. He will need it... and just keep encouraging him. To take it one step at a time. There is no shame in baby steps.

Matt and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us updated.

Scorpgurl - I agree with Cristina. Please tell Matt to keep the faith! We have heard more stories of doctors telling patients they will never walk, ride, be the same again etc., only to have the injured person prove them wrong. Sometimes the docs are right, sometimes not. The worst thing he can do is give up. Please tell him we are thinking of him and let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Would you like one of our injured rider advocates to contact him?

Scorpgurl,
I suffered similar injuries in May 2002....Broke both ankles, tib and fib in both legs....Left leg was broke in 3 places,,clean breaks, some rods, pins and screws,,all routine....Rt leg....4" of tibia disintegrated, they told my wife they were going to amputate the foot,,but another surgeon stepped up and decided to take a shot at rebuilding it. When the bone exploded ,it severed all tendons ,nerves and muscle.
After 4 weeks in hospital, 8 operations,my foot was still there and i was sent home,,,,,5 more operations over the next 7 months. They rebuilt it using scraps of bone that was left, bone grafts from my hip, cadaver bone, and manmade synthetics. Nerve reconstruction ,tendon and ligament reatatchment....Then rehab, almost 9 months of it,,,It sucked and still does.
I do have permanent damage, anke doesn't bend, toes don't work, pain every day............................I was told ,i'd be lucky to walk right, and riding was out. But hard work, dedication to rehab and i'm sure a little luck,,after 18 months,i was cleared to ride.
I know this is long ,but you should have your boyfriend read this.....All is not lost. I don't know where you live, but there are some miracle worker surgeons in Houston....He should get 2nd,3rd and 4th opinions...There is someone out there with the skill to repair his damage..
If he or you want to talk, feel free to send me a PM or email
erikshell1@sbcglobal.net
I'd be happy to try and boost his spirits.

Good luck

I have been in his same shoes. I broke several bones and been told that I would never be able to ride again. The Dr.s these days are more worried about lawsuits than healing.(I have a medical malpractice lawyer in the family) I have broken my left wrist just like Jeff Emigs. I was told I wouldnt ride again. Just like Jeff I ride. The Dr.s are just covering thier butt. It takes a mindset that you are going to prove them wrong then work to make it happen. If Matt would like to talk you can email me at racing56@verizon.net I have also broken my left leg, steel plate and screws. All thier mumbo jumbo. Dont let them stop you from riding! God Bless! RACERS NEVER QUIT

Thank you again to all of you who have responded to this. I have printed your responses out for my boyfriend to read and I think they are helping, he said that they are encouraging him so keep them coming! I am also emailing back and forth with Dr Sanders in Houston trying to get him some good xray's of Matt's shattered Talus to see if he might be able to help him. Also, in the meantime, I am going to have him fill out a Rider Down Intake form to see if we can get him additional help. I am so happy to have found this site and the support from everyone, thank you all.

HI Matt keep your head up and keep visualizing the outcome you want but do not stay in the future with your thoughts. Take it one day at a time and one moment at a time. The past is over and you can not do anything to change it and the future is not here yet and no amount of worrying will affect it. The only thing any of us have in this life is right now this moment in time the present, this is the only thing that is real. I know this may sound far fetched to some but it is the only truly way to make the most of anything worthwhile in our lives. Start reading or listening to books on tape while you are laid up. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a great book on this subject or Lance Armstrongs book and how he overcame cancer. Instead of looking at this as being a setback look at it as being an opportunity to make yourself stronger mentally. We are all on a journey and you have two options you can believe you are just having bad luck and everything in your life is all about you or you can realize there is a power greater than yourself that we are all a part of and be open to the signs along your path that you are given. You will find it is preparing you for something else farther down your path. But if you drive along lost in thought in the past or in the future you will surely miss it just like we do when we are lost in thought as we drive by some of the most beautiful scenery and life itself everyday.

Stay positive,

Ps. Great job of support, Scorpgurl :thumb

Hang in there Matt and get positive about life and know that setbacks are just a part of it. I wish you the best and truly believe that the same drive that makes you a great rider will also lead to other great things in your life.
