Derwud

We went out with a good group this weekend. It was a good trip, but one of our pals took a bad (dumb, but bad) fall and broke his leg pretty bad.
Darryl (derwud) broke both bones in his right leg below the knee.
I called his wife this evening. She checked him into their local hospital as soon as they got into town yesterday. They did a CAT scan this morning and found that his tib was shattered to pieces and his fib is broken too. They've scheduled surgery for tomorrow morning. He won't be able to put any weight on that leg for the next three months.
As far as logistics go, his wife already got a permit from the city to park their trailer in front of their house for a few days. Darryl's dad will come over and park it beside their house tomorrow or Tuesday.
Jeanette said they'll have to "taxi him to work" until he can drive again. I assume there's some kind of corporate carpool that can get him there; there's no way they're putting him in a cab twice a day for the next three months.
I haven't talked to Darryl yet. I did get a text from him this morning around 10:00: "I'm so screwed". (A man of few words )
I'll go see him in the hospital tomorrow afternoon after he's out of surgery.
Jeanette couldn't say enough how much she appreciated everyone's help. She was pretty emotional about how grateful they are.
There's a long list of Good Samaritans from this trip:
Phil (SoCal Camper) and John (RidingFamily4) drove him down to the nearest ER (absolute ghetto to hear them tell it). My wife and daughter took care of Darryl & Jeanette's two daughters while they were at the ER (hopefully that will cure Pam of wanting another little one!). Meanwhile Phil's wife Pam and Jeff's (JWS's) wife Heather did all the dishes and packed up Darryl's trailer. When they got back with the truck and wounded Darryl, Phil and the gang hitched up Darryl's trailer and I drove it out of the camp so Jeanette could get her first towing experience starting off from a straight shot.
Anyway, no pain, no gain... But it sucks to see it happen. It's always good to see decent people banding together to help another family out. Darryl's family doesn't take it for granted. Their next born child will be named Phil John Heather Pam Pam Skelton.

I just got back from visiting Darryl. He had some trouble in surgery. Apparently he's a lightweight and can't tolerate the anesthesia. He vomited and then aspirated the fluids back into his lungs. He's in Intensive Care now. When I saw him he was sitting up and talking with his wife and folks.
He seemed to be in pretty decent shape (but what do I know?). He kept trying to shoot the bull with me, but I couldn't understand him very well with his O2 mask on. Then he'd take the mask off to talk, but that made all the machines go bing.
I finally decided that my visit was not "what the doctors ordered", so I took off after about twenty minutes. BUT NOT BEFORE showing his mother photos of him flipping a double bird and NOT BEFORE getting his lame explanation of his wreck.
It was just like we all thought, he creamed himself while riding in the little kids' quad track. That kids' track was pretty deep though. Trying to ride out of the track he decided to give it some gas to get over the berm. But his front wheel washed out to the side and his bike stopped cold. As he was flying over the bars his upper shin smacked into the bars right between his boot and his kneepads. He said he could tell it was broke before he hit the ground.
Yesterday during the drive home I was trying to remember if I've ever seen him dump before. We've ridden together quite a bit since the first Rally and I don't think I've ever seen him wipe out. (He's seen me on the ground enough times.) So I guess he saved it all up for this one wipe out (when nobody was looking).
So on this new bike ('07 WR450) he put in a good day out at Spangler with my wife and I over New Year. They were both breaking in their new bikes, but after the first hour or so they weren't holding back. So he got in that one good day plus about twelve minutes on Saturday. He won't be riding again this season. That's gotta hurt!
He and his wife send their thanks back out to all of you for all of your help, support, and good wishes. I had printed out this thread and one from the, ahem, other site so he could read up, but I decided it wouldn't be a good idea to leave those behind. No sense getting him into more trouble than he's already in. For now I'd hold off on sending the stripper-gram to his room.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was in the hills to the north of the 15. The nearest ER was in Barstow. I wasn't there, but Phil (SoCal) and John (FamilyRiding4) said it was worse than a Tijuana men's room. They basically just put it in a splint and told him to "have someone good take a look at it in the next day or so". I hope they didn't charge much for that treatment.

Darryl says "hey" to everyone here. He also says "tellumall isay therhtuh bessst" which is Codineeze for "Tell them all I say they're the best" He sends his thanks to everyone here and at the other forums where he frequents (VictoriasSecret.com, etc.).
He's not sure when they'll discharge him yet. He seemed pretty unclear on what day it was. I pointed to the board where the nurses write the date. He said "they never update that thing", but it was correct. He's definitely in a drug-induced time warp.
His wife and I unloaded all the toys from his trailer and used his Power Caster to park the trailer behind his house.
I'm putting together a care package to take to him on Friday or Saturday. PM me if you want to add anything or tag along.

Well it's been 3 long hard months, I'm finally able to put weight on my leg and try to walk. The Doctor told me I will probably need a knee replacement down the road and at least one more surgery to remove the hardware.
