This was pulled from Chase Borders web site and was the last update on his site:
Four Steps Forward - One Step Back
Latest Update: Wednesday, February 14th, 11:30am, CST.
For most of Chase's ordeal it seemed like we would take one step forward and two or three steps back. Well it's not that bad, but Chase has had a very rough last few days.
Johnny felt like he had taken four steps forward and one or two back.
Chase developed a urinary tract infection over the weekend and has gotten very sick. He's been throwing up his meds, has had to be suctioned out a lot, and they put him back on the ventilator--but just at night to help him sleep. We went several days with little or no sleep. So they decided to help him catch up on his rest and get over this infection, they would put him on the vent overnight.
He came off the vent yesterday--and I'm assuming slept on it again last night. Johnny's busy filling out paperwork for Chase's wheelchair and other equipment so he didn't have time to give me an update from this morning.
Chase was supposed to go to physical therapy this morning. Johnny said the physical and occupational therapy folks are making huge progress with Chase. He said Chase is able to hold a sucker in his left arm and lick it and can eat a little bit with his right arm in a support.
They did a couple chest x-rays on Chase and found a spot in his right lung that turned out to be a mucus plug. They cleaned that out yesterday with a bronchoscopy.
Johnny said he's been running a fever between 100 and 102.5 and has been feeling really bad and is weak.
If you get the chance shoot him an e-mail at the Shepherd Center--Chase could use the moral support right now.
He really has taken four steps forward (or more) and this one step back will pass. Once the antibiotics kick in good, he'll be back on track.
Blue Cross is now saying his release date in this Friday, the 16th. But again, last we heard that was week-to-week based on his progress. Let's all pray they see what they're looking for in this week's progress reports and keep him there and moving forward.
Thanks again to all! God Bless,
Tom B.
Yesterday I spoke with Johnny, Chases father, for awhile on the phone talking about Chase, his condition and the benefit race we are going to hold for Chase and Nick DePalo, with the help of Rider Down (for Chase) and Road 2 Recovery (for Nick). Johnny had said that they had high hopes that Chase would be able to attend the Atlanta Supercross, but it was not looking good at the time. I asked him to please let me know if things changed or if he needed help with anything, and to keep me up to date on his progress as well.
Chase was still on the vent, but only at night to help him rest easier. His fever was more under control, and Chase was eating a little food and was able to keep it down, which was great news!!
Well, yesterday late afternoon, my cell phone rang, and it was Johnny. He sounded like a little kid in a candy store. He said "Tammy!! Guess What??" I asked him to tell me and he said:
"I am at the hospital, and I was talking to the doctors about the plans we had for Chase going to the Supercross and how he wanted to go so badly. The doctors told me that they thought it was a good idea to let Chase go, SO HE IS GOING TO THE SUPERCROSS!!!"
He was so excited, I almost wanted to do back flips! I was so happy and excited not only for Chase, but for Johnny as well. You could hear the joy in his voice! However, Johnny had a problem. With Chase still on the vent at times, he has to have 3 nurses go along with him to the SX, and Johnny did not have enough tickets. He asked me if I could see about getting him help in finding 5 tickets. I told him I would see what I could come up with and would call him back. Finding 5 SX tickets, with the seating being all together, this late would be a task!
In less than an hour of that phone call, and with the help of Matt (Brendans_Dad), we had 5 VIP Press Passes and full credentials for the whole Borders gang. Live Nation stepped up and gave them full access to the whole event.
So, everyone say your prayers, keep all your toes, fingers, eyes and anything else you can cross, that Chase has no more set backs this week and will be at the event on Saturday! I cannot wait to see him and Johnny, and it will be so awesome to be able to sit next to both him and Nick and see a smile on both of these kids faces.
I would also like to say a HUGE thank you to our one and only Bruce and to Ricky Patterson from Freewheelin' for working very hard on getting 5 tickets for Chase as well. Live Nation just beat them to the punch.
If anyone would like to email Chase or Johnny, you may do so at borders910@yahoo.com. I am sure they would love to hear from anyone and everyone.
I will keep this thread updated as needed if anything changes. Hopefully the next update to this thread will be me posting pictures of Chase and Johnny at the Supercross!!
