What is wrong with us?

Here I sit with a full arm cast after hitting a tree and having to have two plates put in my arm, 2 cracked ribs, bruised knee, bruised shoulder and side, and a left wrist that still has some issues and a left knee that has no ACL from a previous accident 2 years ago. Even on the way to the emergency room I was bummed and wondering how long I'll have to be off the bike this time, it never even crossed my mind to think I would not ride again. The list of injuries are long and I'm sure it is the same for most of you. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

YouTube - Motocross Crashes 2005

Damn, I sure in Hell don't know what's wrong with me But I do know all I want to do is go riding!!!!!0-0 (Kind of looks like me)

What gets me is if you do have to go to the emergency room, the only thing you can think about is my bike OK, and I hope they don't have to cut any riding gear off.

I am just going to say it is just for the love of riding, it gives you a feeling like no other.

I know what you are saying about wanting to going riding, I have not been able to ride the 200 yet, the weather has been so crappy here you can't go ride.

Joe - well maybe we are nuts! Injuries are part of (just about) every sport. I'll quit riding when they pry the bars from cold, dead hands - hopefully at a very ripe old age and still with a big, 'ol smile on my face!

ps. That's some wild music in that video Joe, is that what you keep stacked in the CD player at home?

Go Ride!

I know what you mean. They tried to save a well used glove, probably couldn't give it away, on that hand and putting me in all kinds of pain tugging on it while I kept saying was cut that thing off. Then the next thing you know they are cutting off my Expensive jersey. My good friend went and spent 2 hours looking for my bike after he was comfortable they were taking good care of me at the ER.

Actually, I love some of that, Nickelback is great music to pump you up to ride. See what I mean with this topic?

Yeah - I love the music, it's just some of the lyrics aren't very kid friendly & have been banned in my house. Most adults I've talked with about it have never taken the time to listen to or else just plain can't understand the words.

Man - that sucks, I sound really old & conservative, eh?

Yea, I know what you mean. When I listen to any hard rock I never listen to the Lyrics, they are usually not the most profound thoughts anyways  but I do like the actual music. I'm old too what can I say.

That video made me cringe more than once....

Yeah though, we're all sick. But it's a good kinda sick.

That song... I heard it the other day while driving and was glad the kids weren't in the truck with me. But, I listened to the whole thing. Nickleback is definitely good riding music... I guess I should be glad I can still understand the words?

What can I say Joe, dirt bikes are our drug of choice.

I got into a fight with the EMTs back in 1980 when my OW 426 kitted YZ 400 pounded my into the ground and layed on top of me burning my back with the side of the tire. Once they got the bike off of me I was soooooo loopy I would not let them cut off a shredded jersey.

You know what, I was out riding a week later with bandages on, while waiting for the wound to debris so I could get a skin graft.

Kyle-You CornHuskers are a whole other breed!! That sounds terrible your back must of been a mess.

Char- Your still just a kid give it another 20 years.

The burn was actually black with rubber imbedded into the wound. I had to wait 6 weeks before they could do the skin graft. It is really hard to change dressings on your back by yourself, if you know what I mean.

My back is still a mess to look at with the skin graft and all, plus I lost about 15-20% of my bodies ability to disipate heat as I cannot sweat where the skin graft is.

I have a very high pain threshold, that or I am just not very bright. I have finished a enduro once with two broken toes, and once with a seperated shoulder, both in the same season. I finished second in the Open A class in D-22 that year.

Hey Kyle:

You just need to drive 6 hours south to the Springfield, MO area and we are riding. We are expecting 50 degrees tomorrow and 58 on Monday. I will be cutting new trail at our new club ranch on Sunday and riding at my own place on Monday during my "lunch" break.

Come on down and bring that 2 hunny, It needs to be ridden.

Shawn

On Subject: Why do we ride after injuries? That is the same question I hear over and over. I tried to quit, I just can't. It is all about what defines us as people.

Thanks for sharing Guys, it's nice to know I'm really pretty sane compared to most of you.

I was going stir crazy yesterday, it has been five weeks and it's prime riding season down here. By the time I'll be cleared to ride in a couple of months the heat and humidity will be back. Oh, well.

Just read a book called the Power of Now, it's about staying in the present and not dwelling on the past or waiting for the future to arrive. I think this adrenaline addiction that we all have is our form of meditation. It keeps you totally focused on the moment there is no past or future there's just right now. I was sitting with my wife some months back in an outdoor grille and these 4 guys in their 70's came in with their plaid golf outfits on. I told my wife that will be me and the guys when we are that age but we'll have our riding gear on instead, she gave me a pretty hard look, I'm sure you have all been there.

Kyle- I'll be in Colorado this July for sure! We'll have to have a show n tell at the camp fire, I'm a light weight in the injury department compared to that group. I want to check out that nasty burn.

No more tree hugging for me at speed. 0-0 :ops:

This is was the position of my right arm for 10 weeks, I have now been in a below the elbow or forearm cast for the past 3 weeks with 10 days to go, I hope. If all looks good I can dodge having to have a bone graff and more cast time. I have been using a Bone Stimulator loan to me by one of our Members, Thanks Darring!

Joe - you've really got to stop calling yourself old. Pretty soon you'll have everyone believing it (including yourself). And....none of us are all that far behind you in terms of years!

Hey, it's been 21 months since I've gotten to ride and I still think about it every day. If there's a cure for SCI tomorrow, I'd be back on my bike first thing. Maybe it's just an incentive to heal a little faster for all of us.

You know Jeremy, I haven't felt sorry for myself one bit. I can only imagine the pain and suffering you all have been through and I have thought about you and the others who have shown so much courage, strength and hope. I know you will walk again and may ride again if wish to do so, I truly believe that so do not ever give up hope or let anyone ever tell you different. I'm looking forward to meeting you one of these days at an event and we can all just kick back and have some fun.

All the best!

Man I am the same way. All I can ever think about is boy I hope my bikes okay. I just can't afford anything major! There are times where I won't try something at first because I am afraid If I did fall the damage that might happen to my pride and joy.

I guess thats the nature of the beast when you pay for your toys (especially at 15).

Oh and Get better Joe! Best of wishes.
