Hello all, my name is Mailee. I'm a 31 year old basically starting all over again with riding. After reading some of the stories on here, I feel my injury was not the worse by no means. I am also amazed at how many ppl have gone through a heck of alot and are still riding and enjoying the sport. Hats off to you all...
On July 4th, 2006, I had to say those words i have found to be horrible words that should never ever be said...lol...."one last ride".
I was riding pretty fast...I believe now a little too fast and hard for the bike I have, xr100. The bike hit a rut, one that had been hit many times before, this time I went too far up off the seat and when i was coming down the bike kicked back up, throwing both myself and the bike down. The bike drug me a good ways on the ground by the leg..When the bike was taken off I was in immediate pain, my leg stuck pulled up and wouldn't move, and felt like it was on fire from the inside. After quite a long time of trying to get my boot off, which had to cut the water proof lining to get it off, went to the hospital where they informed me that i had fractured the tibial plateau of my right leg.
After going through surgery, the addition of a plate, pins, and screws to my leg, and theropy, the dr says it has healed really well. But, here is the problem, when i went back to work I lost the insurance that was helping pay for everything, therefore, theropy was not possible and I am having problems getting the muscles to work properly. After three months of theropy, i had 68% usage of my leg and things were coming along well. Went through aquatic exercises, the electric stimulization treatment, and finally to the gym. Right before I lost the insurance and had to stop the theropy, the theropist did an evaluation and the usage went down to 45%, but without being able to afford the cost of theropy, there was nothing I could do to fix the problem. there were some exercises that the theropist said i could try and do at home, but I cannot hold my own weight to do them.
When I wrecked there were no tears or rips in any of the muscles or the ligaments. Now I am having alot of trouble getting the vastus medialis to work at all. This is the muscle that is giving me the most trouble. There is an indention in my leg where the muscle should be. I could use some advice on what I can do to get this muscle to work again. I would like to ride again but with the muscles not working properly I am afraid of fallin to the right, not being able to hold my own weight and reinjuring it.
Also I am afraid to ride the bike now. Not afraid to ride, but afraid of the bike kickin my butt again. I have tried selling it but noone seeming to be interested. I need to sell it to get the money to get another bike that I will feel more comfortable riding, one with better suspention. Am looking to get an 80 or 85 because i am small and need a smaller frame bike....Really love the new honda 150's and the 85's....but cannot afford one so looking for something older but without gettin rid of this bike first can't afford another one so i'm stuck....
Any help will be greatly appriciated....
