hello my name is Jaime. I live in Northern Ca. I began riding when I was 5 on a 185 three wheeler. I now ride a Kawi 400 quad. When I was younger we didn't wear helmets let alone boots and chest protectors. My parents were lucky if I wore shoes as you can see from my profile pic. I started my 8 year old son riding a quad when he was 4 then a 50 motorcycle when he was 5. He began to get serious about racing this past year after a season of speedway and his first motoX at Sac Raceway this winter. It was originally hard to get past the old idea of "we never had to wear safety gear". Those feelings changed the first time the gates went down for my boy. I would have wraped him in bubble wrap if I could have. I noticed that many of the other peewees and jrs didn't have neck rolls and my son even asked if he could take his off. I said noway and thought to myself am I to overprotective. Then my cousin gave me Magoo's movie. I had known of Magoo for over 15 years and even met him several times because he lived in town. The movie opened my eyes about rider safety and how important one piece of equiptment can be. Danny's message about children riding was wonderfull. My girls got there first bikes today and you better believe that they got a full set of safety gear with it. I understand that some things happen but it is better to do all you can while you can. I am very happy to see an organization that is there to help when others walk away. As a motoX mom it is very reasurring. Keep up the good work. !=!

Hi Jaime - welcome to RiderDown. Stay safe on that Kawi and keep spreading the word about safety! You mention that your girls just got their first bikes (and all the safety gear) - Congratulations! How old are they & what kind of bikes did they get?

Hi Mudmama-
Welcome to RDF.
I too live in the Bay Area (NorCal). You're right by sticking to your guns about the neck roll - you're a good "mama".
BTW- Magoo is a big supporter of RiderDown and a good person.

My girls are 5 and 6. They got Honda 50 motorcyles. My son also got a Kawi 65. This is a big step up from the Honda 50 but he is almost 90lbs. I am a little nerviouse about the power band. The girls will begin learning this weekend. The first lesson I teach them is pick it up. If you cant get it off the ground you cant ride it. My son is hopeing to get good enough on the 65 to ride it next season. They all started on little Kawi 50 quads to get the concept. Now they all want to ride motorcyles and mom still rides a quad. I still rip it though. We live in Auburn about 7min from Foresthill where Magoo grew up. There are some awsome open dirt areas up there to learn. I love the trails. Right now there is alot of mud. I love the mud. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/mudmama4x4/Jaimerelaxing.jpg
