I have alot of questions about this situation, so I will probably repost a bit.
My son fell during practice and broke his leg. We are a month into a hip length cast with one to go. He celebrated his 7th birthday in the cast. He has been doing great and is very creative in the wheelchair and on his crutches, enough so that I worry about him more now than when he races.
He wants to get back on the bike really bad, but I want to make sure he is ready. Any advice about judging his readiness would be great. I am concerned in two areas really. 1. Bone strength 2. Muscle strength in the legs.
Also, I am looking for ways to help him regain the leg strength he had before. This seems fairly simple, but he is just a kid and I have never seen the comeback process first hand.
As far as what the Dr has told us, he is totally anti motorcycles and told us to never put him on a bike again. He initially told us to expect 6 months to be back to normal, but I doubt he will ever give the green light on riding again. Having said that he is really a good doc.
I am not pushing to get back on the bike, but as soon as the cast comes off in a few weeks I know my son will be. I want to be able to give him some goals to shoot for to earn the right to ride again.
I would also like to have some ideas about how to gain back muscles from the atrophy. Do kids work out just like adults? Riding bicycle, running, swimming etc? What about weight lifting appropriate for thier size?
Initially I had tried to talk my son into something besides MX. Him and my wife wouldn't have any of that. I thought mini sprints would be fun, but he said "they don't get off the ground, how could that be any fun?" I didn't sell anything, but the honey do list has grown a ton. Racing requires more time than I realized.
Thanks for any advice.
Sorry this is so long, I cut/pasted from KTMtalk posts.
