GODSPEED WILLIE ?SUPERFLY? MCCORMICK...YOU ARE SORELY MISSED;

THE WILLIE MCCORMICK YOUTH FOUNDATION ESTABLISHED

Willie "Superfly" McCormick #119 age 10 years old died on October 8th, 2005 doing what he loved most in this world racing in a motocross event at the Extreme Motosports complex in Airway Heights, Washington. Willie had been racing since he was four and was determined that one day he would be a pro rider. Willie's favorite rider was Bubba Stewart, but he liked them all and every year at the WASHOUGAL event he would visit every pro rider in attendance. Willie was not a shy little boy and at one event in Idaho he once advised a pro rider who had finished badly that all he had to do was get his rear end off his bike seat and ride harder and perhaps he might finish higher.

Willie had made many friends during his brief life and was a favorite in the racing community. His given name was Heath William Hutchings, but he adopted his step-dad's last name and became Willie "Superfly" McCormick. The track announcer at Airway Heights would rather have called him "Downtown Willie Mac" because as he once said, "Willie reminded him of a downtown kind of kid.", but Willie would have none of that. Beyond the racing arena Willie was also a favorite among his playmates, but stood out in all of our minds because of his willingness to reach out to those who normally are pushed aside because they couldn't do all or some of what other kids did.

On one occasion a young boy mentioned to Willie that he had no friends to which Willie said, "You don't have any friends? No problem, I'll be your friend." On the Monday after his death Willie's mom went to his school to help the children cope with what had occurred and when she was introduced to the class as Willie's mom a little boy in a wheel chair tried to stand up and hug her. This was one of the unacceptables Willie had befriended when no one else would play with him. Willie was that way. Little kids followed him around and he always made time for them. Willie loved our country's flag and the pledge of allegiance. Willie loved animals and they loved him back.

In Willie's memory the family is in the process of establishing the Willie McCormick Youth Foundation as a means to help other boys and girls like Willie to live out their dreams and passions.

Willie wore glasses, but that need wasn't discovered until he was almost 7 years old so one of the goals of the foundation will focus on early childhood vision testing. Scholarships for all types of activities will be awarded to boys and girls who might not otherwise be able to participate will be provided through the foundation. The activities will be in all areas of life to include sports, creative arts, tutoring for boys and girls struggling in school, etc...The family is also forming McCormick Racing and the young boys and girls who become team members will become part of Team Superfly.

The family is setting up this 501c organization in a way that will preclude any of us from having access to the actual funding, but will maintain final approval authority. Once an official web-site is established financial records will be available for review to all who are interested. We have already secured an excellent motocross rider who will provide instruction free of charge two or three times a year for young boys and girls just beginning their special journey called motocross/supercross.

Other inquires are being made to secure specialists in areas where we might eventually be able to provide services to other young boys and girls.

Willie's death ended his personal dream to become a pro rider, but his family remains committed to the sport and to helping someone who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to become a pro (rider, writer, singer, teacher, etc.) to realize their dream and in the process continue what we believe Willie would have done with his life.

YOUNG RACER DIES AFTER FALLING FROM MOTORCYCLE; 10-year-old Willie
Spokesman Review, The (Spokane), Oct 12, 2005 by Jonathan Brunt Staff writer
Willie McCormick had done so well racing motorcycles this year that all he had to do to claim a first-place trophy on Sunday was show up.

The 10-year-old from Mead, who earned more than 100 trophies during a six-year racing career, died Saturday after he fell from his motorcycle at the Spokane Off-Road Vehicle Park near Airway Heights.

On Sunday, his family will be presented with the trophy he earned when participating in the first five of six events in a beginner series of races at the Fossil Bowl in Clarkia, Idaho. He was leading by so many points that no one could have beaten him had he participated in the last race, said Kenneth Kienbaum, manager of the bowl.

McCormick, who went by Superfly as a racer, had wanted to race motorcycles since he was 2, when he asked his parents for a "momo," said his father, Bob McCormick.

They relented a couple years later, and at the age of 39 Bob McCormick followed his son into the sport. They've been racing buddies ever since.

"He was my best friend," McCormick said. "For such a little guy, he had such a big heart."

Willie, a fifth-grader at Meadow Ridge Elementary, was finishing up the last race of the day at the ORV Park's Extreme Motorsport Motocross Track when he fell from the bike.

He was taken from the park by helicopter and died on his way to Sacred Heart Medical Center, said Dawn Bristlin, a close family friend whose son also races. Bristlin said a cause of death has not been determined.

"His life might have been short on earth, but that boy definitely lived life to the fullest," Bristlin said.

Before races begin Sunday at the Fossil Bowl, there will be a "fallen rider" lap in which family members and riders will honor Willie.

A similar lap was made at the Extreme Motorsport track before races Sunday. Riders raised their helmets in a moment of silence and released balloons in his honor, Bristlin said. The McCormicks told race organizers that Willie would not want races canceled.

"I asked my son Saturday night if he would want to stop," Bristlin said. "He said, 'I race for Willie now.' "

SIDEBAR:TO HELP A memorial fund in Willie McCormick's name has been established to help pay for funeral expenses and to help underprivileged kids participate in motocross racing. Donations can be made at any US Bank branch.SERVICES A celebration of McCormick's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Side Church of Christ, 5601 N. Jefferson Ave. in Spokane. Racers who attend are asked to wear their motocross gear or jerseys. Motocross racers will honor McCormick at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Fossil Bowl in Clarkia, Idaho. This just really hurts when I hear about losing a child. The grief of the moment is just unbearable to think of and then to think about the grief to come when you start thinking what could have been.

I wish them all the strength that it will take to get them through this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Godspeed Willy and Family.

You can never imagine the pain we've gone through for the past 7-8 months now, but people will never imagine either the comfort we've gotten from our motocross family. I will be hard pressed to give back as much as was given to us during this difficult time. I will try, though. I can't express enough how much our grief is softened by the honest love and support that is shown to us. While Willie's death will be a forever pain in our hearts that we will never be able to remedy, the good we do in honor of his memory will see us through the hardest of times. We cry every day for what we no longer have, but we smile every day for what we did have...and cherish that with our whole hearts.

Hug your kids today, and every day, and let them know you love them!

Tanya,

I am so sorry for this loss and pain you have to endure. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like and how I would cope with the loss of a child.

One day when you're with Willie again all the questions will be answered, for that I am sure of. I have this belief that before we take on these challenges in this life we know what difficulties we are to face and we chose to take on those difficulties for a greater purpose that will be revealed later. We think, who in the world would want to take on something like this? Our physical life seems so long and at times all we have but the life of our souls are infinite and when they look at taking on a challenge for a divine purpose our physical life time is just a blip in time compared to the life of our souls.

I'm not a religious person but I'm a spiritual one who has great belief in our creator.

Forgive me if my attempt of comforting is a bit clumsy. We are here if we can help in anyway.

God Bless,
Joe

Joe,

I think your view is just about perfect. Religious or not you have a good handle on the concepts. It's never a clumsy attempt when it is so obviously heart-felt. Thanks to you all so much for thinking about us, we love the sport and we love the community!
