Lending a helping hand comes naturally to some people, offering assistance to people who enjoy the same things that you do is often a reward in and of itself. We’ve all had times where we could use some support and encouragement to get through a rough patch. The RiderDown Foundation was started with one main goal in mind and almost one year later here we are still pursuing that goal of “Helping Riders Up”. What a tremendous ride it has been so far, to have gained the support of so many great people has been truly humbling. As a growing organization dedicated to helping the two-wheeled off road community we continue to rely on the generous spirit of our fellow riders. We want to thank all of you for the interest and ideas you have shared. The sad news is that more riders (kids & adults) keep getting hurt. We are working diligently to bring more awareness to all of the safety issues surrounding the dirt biker today and we value your input. If you have an idea – please share it.

We are very proud to announce that several of your fellow off-road enthusiasts have recently committed to working with RiderDown in three key capacities. As we have grown and learned more about the many things that need to be done in this sport it has become obvious that we need to enlist the aid of more people to get the message out and fulfill our mission.

With a non-profit organization such as ours we rely heavily on volunteers and we are proud to announce that Angie Koch (maybe better known as 50ccMom) has accepted the position of Volunteer Coordinator. This daunting task of recruiting, organizing and mobilizing a national network of volunteers requires an individual of great diplomacy, tact and resolve, not to mention boundless energy. Angie is this person. Growing up on the East coast, Angie started riding at age 9 on Honda Trail 90’s and has been involved with bikes and motorsports ever since. Her two kids, Ethan age 8 and Hannah, age 4 keep her plenty busy yet she still finds time to get out to the motocross tracks and spread the word about the RiderDown Foundation, at least when Ethan isn’t racing. Her dedication to our cause is nothing short of amazing and in her own words “there is nothing more rewarding than helping to bring a smile to an injured rider”. She can be reached at angie@riderdown.org.

In this day and age it would be impossible to effectively communicate and manage an undertaking such as RiderDown with the use of computers and the internet. We are very proud to announce that our good friend John Lorenz has stepped forward and taken the reins of our Technology Committee. This critical function requires a special person, well versed in today’s IT world yet balanced with an ample amount of patience. Dealing with last minute, urgent requests and users who sometimes can’t tell a CPU from a CRT from a 30 second card, John smiles through it all and takes care of it. He has been an avid rider since 1967 and raced the Dirt Track & Road Racing scene in District 36 during the ‘70s. John has spent the last 20 years working in the quality assurance and technical support side of the Telephony & Network Communications industry. Married since 1987 he has two children and is also the owner of MotoFamilyNews.com, a family oriented, dirt rider website. His email address is jlorenz@riderdown.org.

Once a rider has suffered an injury the recovery process begins. This takes many different forms and is often a long, difficult and sometimes frustrating experience. Many of us who have gone through this process can attest to the importance of getting good advice and really following the program. Having a good resource for medical & physical therapy information as well as someone to offer support and guidance at this stage is huge. Shawn Hall is our guy. We could not be more excited to have him join our organization as the new RiderDown Injured Rider Advocate. Shawn (KTMissouri) is a shining example of someone who cares about people and does something about it. Currently living in the Ozark Mountains of SW Missouri he is fresh off the recovery trail from a traumatic injury himself and is now back racing again. Riding bikes all of his adult life, he started racing MX in the Houston area back in the ‘80s but was soon introduced to woods riding, Enduros and Hare Scrambles. He and his wife Kim have 4 kids and 2 grandchildren. Shawn has served as a Board member of the Black Jack Enduro Circuit for 5 years and is the founding Chairman of the Ozark Mountain Trail Riders Association. His life changed forever on August 25, 2002 and the experience he gained from that day forward he is dedicated to sharing with our brethren in the dirt biking community. He can be reached at shall@riderdown.org.

Please join us in welcoming these great people to the RiderDown Family. We are very excited to have them on board and working towards our goal of “Helping Riders Up”. If there is anything we can do to help you or someone you know who has been injured while dirt biking please contact us. Again, thank you for your support and remember – ride safe!

I just got to meet and visit with Shawn and he is a terrific ambassador for Rider Down. I was so surprised at all the posters and Chad Reed jersey that he brought. It really lifted my spirits. It was a great visit and I'm more motivated than ever. Thanks to Rider Down. I'm looking forward to being an advocate for our sport and supporting other riders. I'm wearing the Rider Down band and hat right now. Saving the t-shirt for when I get to go watch my next race. Thanks again.
