American Medical Bill Review (AMBR) is a great company which I have used to review over $250,000 in hospital bills. They were able to show where I had been over charged several thousand dollars and I was then able to negociate a discount of that amount plus some.
I should mention that AMBR is owned by my sister and her husband, but that has no reflection on the statement above.

Great topic.
After my son of 14 days old spent 1 month in ICU of Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles back in '89 I received the bill..890K..yes that's right almost a million dollars.
Not having a service like AMBR at the time could have cost us dearly. Luckily my wife, who happened to be legal counsel dealing for Providian Insurance Co., was able to review the bill and found many errors to the tune of 240K.
One of the bills had a cost of $165 for two children's aspirin and another $600 for special lunch tray which he never had.
The hospitals are banking that these charges will go unoticed by the insurance companies - many times they do.
Now you know why the cost of insurance is so high.

It never ceases to amaze me how complicated & confusing these billing statements can be! Even on small issues & what you would thinka re normal procedures!

I got a Hospital Bill of 77K, my Mini medical paid 1.5K and the hospital made a $47K adjustment, now my bill is 22K for 8 days of stay.
Not too bad. Did you have anyone look at it to see if it was billed correctly?
Just because the hospital gave you a discount does not mean it was discounted correctly

Yeah, wife, sister and Mom all do Medical billing, billing was correct, prices were WAY inflated... Hospital has now recieved 49K of the requested becasue I was able to get a cobra plan retroactive to before the accident. they havesince everything but the Surgeons bill... Only because the biller is an idiot and I may having to pay out of pocket because of his in-ability to ask for a post approval..
Well you do not necessarily have to pay those bills entirely. We do what the insurance companies do. We go through a mediation process which reduces the bills even more. When it is over, the provider gives us a signed letter stating he agrees to the new, lower, charges.
then that is all you have to pay.

Just had surgery to install a plate and screws to hold my rt tibia together.and know i'm in for a battle...The surgeon that did the work is awesome and has worked on both my knees before and found many errors and overcharges in the billing process...I love the doc ,but am not fond of the billing people at all...Hope it works out better this time around.

Erik - good luck with that aspect of your latest ordeal. I know you're on top of it but don't hesitate to call David and discuss AMBR's services if necessary. :thumb

Just as a side note....even if your bill is correct and you're left with a balance...always ask for a discount. Some call it a reduced cost of care discount or charity but whatever your hospital/doctor calls it ask for it! A lot of people don't know that is available to them and wind up paying a huge bill that they didn't need to pay. Hospitals especially teaching hospitals get grants for charity offered to the community!!! Always ask!!!
