The RiderDown Foundation is kicking off it’s first annual RDF Blood Drive in Memory of Fallen Riders at Freestone County Raceway on June 5th when the Outdoor National Motocross Series comes to Texas. The good folks from CarterBloodCare.org will be on hand with a crew of professionals to make it easy on you. Please spread the word and bring a friend. We all know how important it is to have an adequate supply of blood on hand when it’s needed.

Tony Miller, owner of Freestone County Raceway and FreestoneMX.com has been a valued supporter of the RiderDown Foundation for years now and did not hesitate when the idea first came up to begin the Blood Drive at his track. “This is a great idea and it’s nice to see the riding community step up for good causes like this.” says Tony, “We’re proud to be part of this nationwide effort and glad to give it the holeshot here in Texas.” Please visit www.freestonemx.com for details on the track and the race series. Stop by the RiderDown Booth on Saturday, June 5th at the track to donate or for more info on how you can help. There will also be some special items on display and available as a part of RDF’s ongoing fundraising efforts, including a custom painted helmet, rider jerseys, etc..

The RiderDown Foundation, whose mission is to help injured off-road riders is sponsoring a nationwide, week-long blood drive. The dates for this first annual blood drive are June 7-11, 2010. People wishing to donate blood in the memory of their fallen friends and fellow riders can find their local blood center by visiting RiderDown’s website at www.riderdown.org and look for the thread “RDF Blood Drive in Memory of Fallen Riders - HELP!” We encourage anyone who rides, has children or friends that ride to take a few minutes out of their week to stop at their local blood center to give blood. Wortham, TX – Saturday, June 5, 2010 – On the weekend of June 4-6, 10,000 people are expected to converge on the small town of Wortham, in Freestone County. That’s nearly 10 times the town’s population.
They’re coming for the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the Freestone County Raceway. The track, which opened in 2000 and held its first pro race in 2007, will also play host to another history making event on Saturday, June 5, when the RiderDown Foundation partners for the first time with Carter BloodCare to collect blood. The drive from 8:30am – 6pm, is part of a nationwide, week-long series of blood drives being held in memory of fallen riders.
The RiderDown Foundation’s mission is to help injured off-road riders. The organization is encouraging anyone who rides, or who has children or friends who ride, to give blood at the event in honor of those killed or injured in biking accidents.
For Carter BloodCare, the new partnership and this first drive of what is intended to be an annual event could not come at a better time. Blood donations generally drop during the summer months when school is out and families are vacationing. But a consistent supply of blood is still needed in the summer months and giving at this blood drive will help meet that local need.
Carter BloodCare serves 16 hospitals in Central Texas, and more than 200 in its entire 56-county service area of North, Central and East Texas. But only 37% of the population is even eligible to give blood, and of those, less than 5% actually do.
Approximately 1,100 donors are needed each day to meet the needs of those hospitals. In fact, every 90 seconds of every day, blood transfusions occur in Carter BloodCare’s service area and on average, 600 people rely on blood transfusions each day to survive. It is important to know that there is no substitute for blood and it cannot be stockpiled. Blood is perishable and the supply must be constantly replenished. Carter BloodCare can typically maintain a 2-3 day supply of blood.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years old, 16 with a parent’s consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. For more information about donor eligibility, call Carter BloodCare at 1-800-DONATE-4 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
