View Full Version : Tib/Fib fractures?

Wow, I sure am seeing a lot of these lately. When we raced a few weeks ago I got to be the transport to the hospital for one of my son's friends...the paramedics offered to get an ambulance, but said it didn't look like anything was broken, well, the kids leg kept swelling and swelling, that we didn't want to wait 3 hours (drive home) to have it checked, so took him to the local hospital. Well, he came back from xray with a tib/fib fracture, but thank God, it wasn't serious--he only had to wait for the swelling to go down and get casted--it didn't have to be set or pinned.
Ok, so now to my question--the fractures we are seeing are right about the area where a foot peg is hitting their shin--my son showed us exactly the same place where his buddy had broke his by showing us where his is really bruised. Maybe we've just been lucky with the knee pad/shin guard and good boots, that have kept us from one of these injuries, but is there anything anyone (Dr. Mark?) would recommend to help prevent this?
Thanks
Dawn

don't the children wear boots and shin protectors that come up over where the foot peg would hit the shin?
Most boots should come up pretty high and the shin protectors that I wear on their upper end have a clam shell over the knee cap.

My sons right tib fib was broken when the bike came down on top of him. He was going slow and wearing riding boots. He was actually going to slow, he usually lands clear of the bike.

I just happened to have this break last week. I was going through some deep ruts, and got cross-rutted. The bike ended up throwing me over and landing right back on top of me. I had surgery the same night for a dislocation of the tib/fib. My surgery consists of three screws and a permanent rod; two screws in the bottom and one below the knee. I don't have any x-rays.
I was wondering how long I should expect to be out here. I've heard anywhere from 8weeks-6months? I know I wont be out on the track again this season but I can't work either.
I've been elevated and icing for a week straight now. I wonder if this is too much? I want to get up and move around but seems counter productive to my recovery.

I broke my tib/fib as well.( mine was a compound).and had a plate installed...whatever you do, do not rush the healing...listen to the Dr's..I was walking and back to normal in about 4.5 months..just listen to the Drs and let it heal correclty...
as far as preventing them?? I dont think we can..seems from what i read most of these breaks come from falls and then being hit, I was hit came off and was hit by other riders in a whoop section, no way to protect from that.
