Sierra here just wanted to put a few more details out there.
The accident happened on 12/6/08. Jesse and a group of buddies went out for a ride and found a good dune they were all jumping. From what I understand, Jesse had just gotten to the top of the dune and was sitting on his bike and another rider who was with them was already headed up the other side of the dune. I'm assuming it must have been a steep hill where Jesse couldn't see that someone was already coming up. Anyway, the other rider had come up so fast, he jumped over Jesse and his back tire caught the hood of Jesse's helmet. The force of the tired threw his neck back and off the bike. He was immediatly knocked out and unconciuos. Fortunatly, his friends were there to witness the accident and knew not to move him. They tapped on his sternum to wake him up and once he woke up he said his neck really hurt and he couldnt feel anything.
After the dune's rangers got there, they called 911 right away and the EMT's acessed the situation and knew it was a trama. Life flight flew him to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria. The neurosureon told us that his C-5 was bursted. I believe his C-4 and C-6 had been fractured as well. We asked what that ment, and he said he was quadraplegic and that the first 24 hrs were very critical and he could die. After 3 1/2 weeks in CCU, Jesse had undergone 2 major surgeries on his neck, cought pneumonia (w/ staph), had a feeding tube put in, put on the ventillator (still on the vent too), and a few small outpatient procedures.
Now Jesse is at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. 12/31/08 was his first day. Here is where he will undergo extensive respitory therapy and physical therapy. So far Jesse has really good movement and feeling in his right arm (not hands or fingers) and both shoulders. They are trying to strengthen the muscles he can control to the best of his abilities. So we have a long road ahead of us, he all hope and pray that he will regain all of his feeling and movement back and have a full recovery, but we will love him and be here no matter what. Thank you to all that read this, Jesse really needs all the prayers and support he can get.
