Peter's an experienced rider and suffered a serious injury. He and his family are facing a very tough road ahead. Please wish him well.

Brief Description of the Accident

While practicing at Waldo Motorsports track, going over a triple jump, unknown if there was a kicker or a rock that caused Pete to be launched off the motorcycle and he landed on the left side of his head. He has spinal cord injuries and had to have an emergency cervical laminectomy decompression surgery. He is in Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. He has a tracheostomy and a peg in his stomach for tube feeding. Doctors have stated that he will be a quadraplegic, but are confident that he will be able to eventually breathe on his own and possibly able to eat on his own.

Riders Bio

Pete has raced motocross since he was 16 years old and has been an A rider for the past 5-6 years. We have a son who is 10 yrs old and races motocross. We spent every weekend during the racing season going from track to track. Pete is a small business owner with 3 empolyees and has physically worked along with his employees. This is a third generation Masonry Contractor business. He always enjoyed hunting, boating, motocross racing and was in the process of learning to fly a plane, working towards a pilots license. His son and wife need him home in PA to help him get through this tough time mentally. Plus his son has not seen his dad for 2 weeks now.

My name is Lisa Kelchner, Pete's wife. I was able to work with an air ambulance company to get Pete home to PA on 12/12. We were all so happy to have him close. He was able to get off the vent since then, but still has the trach in and is being tube fed. He has some movement in his left arm, but nothing yet in his legs. 2 days ago while fighting an infection with strong antibiotics, Pete developed a serious reaction to the antibiotics. Doctors have stated it is called Stevens Johnson Syndrome. He is now in an acute care facility burn unit to treat this as it is a terrible rash over 80% of his body. Not sure how long he will be there, but we are praying not too long as he would like to start aggressive rehab. I wanted to thank Rider Down Foundation as I have received a very generous monetary gift which will help toward the air ambulance. I never thought there was so many caring, wonderful people in the world. We appreciate all the help we have gotten and want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Lisa and Peter - I know too much on how to fight to OVERCOME. I am praying for you to do just that!! I was not given too much of a chance to come out of a comawith a sever brain shearing injury which i was in for 24 days in August 2008, then i was told i would have severe disabilities. I know i am young and have a major support group with my family, friends and Rider Down and you have the same. i will be here praying for you and walking this path praying for you and your family. Please make sure all the doctors put nutrition #1 so that Peter can heal himself. if you ever need help my mom and the nutrition is why i am alive, please do not hesitate in giving us a call and know we will always be there 775-425-8778. God Bless you and your family! Josh Morros #351

Dearest Lisa and Pete,
We too know the devastation a Spinal Cord injury can bring to a family. We send you our prayers and offer you our strength. Our experience has proven that the Medical Field does not truly know the word determination as the Doctors would have had Amanda (our daughter) in a wheel chair the rest of her life. We never accepted the word “no” or “final”. Please look into Electric Stimulation as this form of therapy has truly made Amanda’s life different than what the Doctors had imagined for her. If you need more information please do not hesitate to contact us. Amanda wants me to tell you that you will have setbacks, don’t give into them and fight back no matter how impossible it seems… You can overcome this!!! Also to please look at Liferollson.org ; there are inspirational people that share their stories, gave Amanda strength and gave her hope. God Bless.
