Can someone here illuminate me on whether these things work? Are they worth it? I mean, it seems like there is a trade off in mobility while riding but if it means I keep my mobility in life then maybe it's more than a fair trade.
I've seperated both shoulders before and crunched my neck pretty good over the years in various sports and activities. I've talked with some guys who say they won't ride without one anymore & that once you get used to it you almost forget that it's there.
Dr. Mark - what's your take on these? At less than $40 is it cheap, useful protection or just a total waste of time and money?

They probably offer some protection against minor strains. That has to be balanced against decreaesed motion, and the possibility of diminishing the rider's field of vision (cant turn your head enough)
Clearly, they would be of little value in the event of a catastrophic bad get off.

It seems as if some of the companies making this product have been "slimming" them down to make them more acceptable to people who have that range of motion concern. It may be another case of whatever it takes to drive sales even at the expense of function.
As I said earlier I've had enough neck & shoulder issues that I started looking at the neck roll & wondering if it's a good idea or not. Of course, I had taken a sabbatical from riding for almost 20 years & when I first got started again I kind scoffed at all of the protective gear guys were now wearing. it didn't take me long to realize most of it was a very good thing!!
Thanks for the feedback - I guess the answer is to try one & if it doesn't interfere with my movement, isn't a total PITA to take on/off and...it provides some measure of protection then I'll go with it.

Hi Bruce
They make so many different types of these that if you get one and don't like it, try a different one. We've seen ones that are more like football ones, that people zip tie to a chest protector--if it works for them, great, it's not for us.
At first my son (now 12) was hesitant, but a vendor had a booth at a large event at our local track, and he decided he wanted to try it--for the $35 or $40 bucks, what did I have to loose? He loves it, won't ride without it--It's called a NeckEd--when it's warm it's nice and plyable, but if it's cold, it's hard as a rock--so, if you are ever up here in the Pacific Northwest in the early racing months, you can find me with the neck roll stuck under my sweatshirt keeping it warm before he heads out to the line.
As to all the different protective gear for riding--I know what you mean, there is always so much--but I can tell you my kid has got hurt less on his race bike than he has on his bicycle. He won't race is motorcycle without wearing a cup (a few to many "bumps" when riding close to the gas cap got him to wear that), a mouthpiece (wouldn't wear one until one of his buddies broke a tooth in a crash), his neck roll, elbow pads, knee pads (not braces) good boots and full gear -long sleeves including goggles with a beak. I know some people like to ride in a short sleeve jersey--after Cody's accident last year (compound fracture of the radius and ulna) any time I see a kid with a short sleeved jersey I ask them politely to put on a long sleeved one and if the need one I have an extra--one of the largest concerns of the surgeon was how much dirt was in the wound--with his gloves and long sleeve jersey--there wasn't any! Most bones heal well, it's the infections that are so hard.
Stay safe, have fun!

The Leatt Brace is one device that I can say works. I had a get off in Colorado and landed on my head. I felt the helment strike the brace keeping my head from twisting. I flopped over and broke a rib and hamate in my hand.
A friend of mine told me to think of it as helmet for your neck. I never ride with out.
