View Full Version : Looking for a Toyhauler

So we've decided a ToyHauler is the way to go for our family. Between personal use and RDF functions this would make life much easier. However money being tight like it is we're looking for a used rig that can be towed by my current 1/2 ton pickup. Does anyone have any good suggestions? We need it to sleep at least 4 and it must have a decent kitchen/bathroom setup, other than that we're flexible.
Thoughts? Got the right one sitting in your yard gathering dust? Let me know!!

Bruce, I'm not an experienced owner but I was looking at some units about a year ago.
I gave up on the toy hauler concept because I found that only the biggest ones have a fully separate garage. Most of the small-to-medium ones have a place for your toys that is fully open to the living area and sometimes the second or third bed actually drops into place when you toys are removed.
This is a turn-off for us because - my thinking here - all it would take is one small puddle of overflow fuel below a bike to make the place unliveable for the evening.
Maybe some members have experience to the contrary.

Is the State that seems to have more toy haulers than I've seen anywhere.
That's where I'd direct an on line search for information.
Toy haulers in California are like old living room furniture in the South. If you don't have it out in the front of you house you're a nobody.
Did Smiley Riley's ever get sold?

Yes, they are plentiful and inexpensive right now here in CA. I guess $5 per gallon of fuel will do that.
I'm trying to sell a box van that gets 9 mpg and I can't give it away!

There seem to be quite a few on Craigslist lately although most are the XXL size which I don't have the truck to haul with. A nice, smaller rig would be perfect for the beating we're likely to put it through between my family, regular riding buddies aka the Dust Pirates and all the RDF gigs. :yikes
Because of the size constraints I'm working with I figure theres no way to avoid the bikes being in the "bedroom" area. We'll work on keeping spillage to a minimum and try to have some type of absorbent, old pad to keep underneath that can be removed ASAP along with the bikes at every stop. We'll see....besides, I love the smell of pre-mix in the morning!! :cool
Steve - I hadn't thought about Smiley's rig, I think I Schultz told me it sold a while back? Good thought.....

Sorry for the Hi-Jack on this thread Bruce!
Was asking 4K but will entertain all offers. It's a super clean 88' Ford E350 (you seen it - heck you even rode in it a couple years back)
I have that figure in replacement parts - nothing wrong, just preventive maintenance.
Recently, about two months ago a new super duper heavy radiator was added as well as new catalytic converter and muffler. All six tires have less than 3000 miles.
Great truck - it's just a hog on fuel with the 460 c.i. engine and 4:11 rear gear ratio. It will tow ANYTHING. No hitch though.
Oh - I just paid the commercial tags on it last week or so - being a commercial vehicle you have to stop at all open weight stations - PITA!

UPDATE! We have changed our approach and have been more focused on going the Class C route. I would still entertain the right ToyHauler but Amy & I have decided that a Class C would be an adventure for the kids and the animals that we always haul along with us. We are looking for a used, slightly older vehicle that we don't have to worry about getting spilled in by the kids (or me). 24 - 28' length with a separate rear bedroom is important.
Anyone have suggestions or warnings about this?

Pulled the trigger yesterday on an older ('93) Winnebago "Minnie Winnie". It was originally used by the Pope and his Cardinals during Denver's World Youth Day - hopefully it's blessed!! Needs a bit of cleaning but nothing major, at least nothing I've found so far. It's got the Ford 460 fuel injected motor with overdrive so it should haul the bikes just fine. For a dyed in the wool tent camper this thing is a big change!
I'll try to get some pics up soon.
