On Saturday (May 24th) Terry was doing some testing on his bike at home and went to ride to the end of the pasture and back. As we constantly preach to the kids ALWAYS wear your safety equipment. Well, Terry had on shorts and tennis shoes. He was on grass and the bike wheelied and the rear wheel slipped on the grass. He let the bike go and when he went down, the bike went down on him with the foot peg ripping into his left ankle and the rear sprocket still turning landed on the ankle and ground it down to the bone. He had the first of at least 4 surgeries yesterday morning. It took all the muscle, tendons, ligaments and what ever else was in there away. He also fractured the ankle and all of his toes. He has a external fixator on the leg for now and will have to have muscle removed from his stomach to fill in there. He will have to under go a series of skin graffs. There is a possibility that the ankle will have to be fused together permantly which would leave him with no movement in the ankle. We are at Baylor in downtown Dallas. We are in room number T-656. As most of you know, he was just getting over both of his legs being shattered and had just started riding again not to long ago. He was out of work from August until about a month ago with that injury. and was confined to bed from August until 1 week before Christmas. Our family has really been devastated with this accident so please keep us in your prayers. During the last wreck we went through all of our savings and everything that we had. The company he had worked for had closed down 3 days prior to him being released to go back to work so now we don't have any insurance either. If you would like to call, my mobile number is 214-869-7197 and his is 214-869-7200 ( I have both phones). I am staying at the hospital with him. The doctor says that if were lucky that he may get to go home for a day or 2 on Saturday. He also said this injury is way more severe than the shattered leg accident. I have seen alot of injuries on both people and horses and I got to say that this is one of the worst that I have ever seen. It is still bleeding. The doctor will change the bandages tomorrow (Tuesday) and if it is not looking good than he will be back in surgery on Wednesday morning. I will keep you updated.

Cara, so sorry to hear this happened to your family again. There is always the saying that the Lord doesn't give us more than we can handle, but I'm sure there are times that it feels like he is testing us. Hang in there and I'll keep your family in my prayers.

The surgery went well yesterday. The doc is pleased with how it is looking. There is 1 piece of skin that they were able to save and he had told me Sunday that it would play a key role in recovery if it lived. Well so far, it is doing good. If it stays alive, more surgery (skin graffs and muscle removal) may not be necessary. They did a whirlpool treatment on it today. I went with him so I could see it with the bandages off and it still looks like something out of a horror movie. I took a picture of it in the ER and sent it to a few close friends and they were shocked. They said that they had tried to imagine it when I descibed it but was not prepared for what they saw. It looks like something a animal chewed on. I took more pics of it today. I have seen alot of bad major injuries but this is right up at the top of the list. If he progresses like he has been, they are going to put a wound vac on it and we can possibly go home on Monday. He will have to stay in bed for several months. It will be a long road of recovery. Thank you for the prayers. They are working!!

Update Saturday May 31st

The doctor came this morning and the plan is to go home on Monday. They will send a nurse out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to change bandages and clean the wound. They are looking at a period of 4 and 1/2 to 6 months healing. They are still going to have to do skin graffs starting in 2 to 3 weeks.

Well, today is Monday - Day 10 and still at the hospital! We thought that we would be going home today but thought wrong again. Maybe tomorrow. Terry's foot is healing good but the doctor said yesterday that it would be 4 and 1/2 up to 6 months of healing time. He is able to get up a few minutes a day with a walker. We tried cruthches but he was to unsteady and with all of the metal rods sticking out of his leg, that was not a good idea.

We finally made it home Tuesday night around 9pm. A nurse came out on Wednesday to change the dressing on the wound vac and it hurt him so bad that he would not let them put it back so now we have to drive everyday to a therapy center for hydrotherapy then to the hospital for Saturday and Sunday therapy. So far we are stayin sane and we have all of our hair and it is not gray yet!!
