Its called a SPOT and you can pick them up at REI and other stores.
This thing is awesome, I tend to go ride and play out on my own and my wife tends to be a bit worried about me. Now I can send her a pre set message to let her know I am all right. Also if I need help and it is not an emergency I can again send out a pre set help message to her/ anyone else I have chosen to have it send. If there is a real emergency I hit the 911 button and it send out the signal to S&R and the people I have pre set to notify.
This thing will track you real time and if I want you to see me on the maps I give you a code and you punch it up and it takes you into Goggle maps and you can see my route I am taking.
149.00 for the unit
99.00 for the normal service 1 year
49.00 for live tracking and unlimited messaging 1year
7.99 for additonal insurance up to 100,000. for privit hellios, planes, etc
For just over 300.00 you can give the friends and family a peace of mind when the cell wont work.
The others devices are only for emergency use only and cost in the range of 500-700.
It works all over the WORLD.

I've seen the TV ads with the Survivor Man guy for this product and I'm interested. In my area, you're not often out of cell range but I hope to make good use of my KTM 950 Adventure in the coming years and this thing would be perfect.

Please keep us updated on your experience.

Thanks.

Man this thing works great. I was in the Rabbit Valley area or Colorado and I set the SPOT to track me and it did a great job, I for got to send a message saying I was ok while it was tracking me. Not sure how to do that while its tracking, going to call them and find out if I just press the OK/Tracking button again while its doing its thing?
The maps on google are great. Keig

I just bought a SPOT and used it for the first time on Tues. Tracking works great. This could be a very valuable piece of safety equipment.

I have one also though I haven't been able to use it a whole lot yet. The times that I have used it though have been helpful to my wife just for the peace of mind aspect. She likes to receive the "All OK" msgs. Fortunately thos are the only msgs I've had to send! :thumb

I've seen ads for that thing and thought it was a really good idea.

I swear by this unit.. took me a bit to find a way to mount it so it tracked to the best of it's ability! I used a small digital camera case mounted on my front fender, it protects the unit and keeps it clean and it tracks great .. my only concern is if I need the 911 button, I might have to crawl to my front fender.

so that just backs up the age old rule.. "never ride alone"
I always let my riding partner know how to use my SPOT and where it is located
